Living a more sustainable lifestyle is always a work in progress; it’s about making small swaps and making better choices that do less harm, one personal and household item at a time. Each swap adds up to making a considerable dent in our environmental footprint as an individual.

Some of the first and most straightforward swaps are switching to reusable or plastic-free product alternatives like reusable coffee cups, Dirt laundry products, or TOM Organic’s reusable period underwear

We’re big advocates of arming people with simple care instructions and the exact products they need to get longevity out of the sustainable items in their wardrobe, especially when it comes to investment pieces like the dependable and reusable period underwear that saves the day each and every month.

Did you know that reusable period underwear should last you up to 40 washes if looked after properly?

When it comes to laundry and bloodied items, people can feel quite intimidated about how to get the best result in the wash. We’re here to help.

HOW DO YOU WASH PERIOD UNDERWEAR

When dealing with blood in the laundry, our recommendation is to bypass traditional stain remedies like vinegar and baking soda, and instead, stick with tried and tested products that'll work every time. When it comes to blood and Dirt, all you need is our laundry detergent. Really.

Blood is easiest to remove from clothes when the stain is fresh. As soon as you take off your undies, all you need is cold water and an enzymatic laundry detergent. Our Advanced Wash is perfect for period underwear.

  1. Rinse the clothing in cold water to flush out as much of the blood as possible.

  2. Spot treat the absorbent panelling in your period underwear for 30 minutes with a pump of Advanced Wash.

  3. Wash as per normal on a cold cycle.

  4. Line dry in the sun.

HOW LONG DOES PERIOD UNDERWEAR TAKE TO DRY?

Period underwear should be line dried only – we recommend drying in the sun if you can, as sunlight has natural anti-microbial properties that are good for your undies. On average, it takes 10-12 hours for a pair of period briefs to dry.

Period underwear should not be put in the dryer as heat will deteriorate the materials in the unique four-layer absorbency system, and may impact the performance or shape of the brief.

ADDITIONAL WASH AND CARE TIPS

  • Avoid fabric softener – this is your period undies’ worst enemy as it breaks down the special technology and natural fibres, leaving a ‘waterproof’ film that can counteract the naturally absorbing properties.

  • Need your period underwear to dry faster? Once you take them out of the wash, speed up the drying process by pressing your briefs into a towel to absorb excess water before hanging them out.

  • Washing your period underwear in a delicates bag can help extend their life by helping to keep them and their elastic in shape when going through the machine.
