We’re taking a minute to give a shout out to the unsung heroes of the laundry world - the unrelenting, spruce-erupperer; aka the washing machine.

With cycle after cycle of transforming our smudge laden rags into crisp, good as new gear it’s no surprise that every now and then our chief laundry manager can get a little under the weather.  When you start noticing those pesky stains aren’t being removed, the residue build up is getting all too much and your bright fiery reds are looking a little more than lacklustre then you know it’s time to treat your machine to some well deserved R & R with a darn good clean.

Some simple tricks of the trade to clean your machine can be done with ingredients and materials found around the house that are also environmentally friendly (#winning!).

All you’ll need is:

  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • Vinegar
  • Sponge

Now things will run a little bit differently depending on what type of machine you have.

To keep those front loaders fresh:

  1. Add 2 tablespoons of bicarb to the detergent drawer
  2. Add ½ cup white vinegar to the drum
  3. Run a normal wash - on hot

N.B. If it starts to sud up a lot it means it’s just working through all that soap residue that’s taken up residence inside your drum.

  1. When it’s finished, don't forget to scrub and wipe down, in between and around the seal to remove any signs of mould build up
  2. Also check out the removeable detergent dispenser and give it a rinse with hot soapy water and allow it to dry in the sun

For the top loaders:

  1. Mix ½ cup bicarb with 2 cups of white vinegar
  2. Run a hot wash cycle and once the drum is half full of water, add in your vinegar concoction
  3. As it’s running through the cycle, give the outside a scrub/wipe down with a damp microfiber cloth
  4. If your fabric softener dispenser is looking like a little grot, remove it and rinse it with hot soapy water and allow it to dry in the sun

Needless to say, it’s always a good idea to first have a read of the care instructions for your machine, especially when it comes to things like cleaning out filters.
